Governor’s School for the Arts
The Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is an arts education program of The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts that provides arts training through a free three-week summer residential program in nine art forms – architecture, creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental music, musical theatre, new media, visual art and vocal music. For more information about GSA (you can’t apply until sophomore year), visit www.kentuckygsa.org.
Governor’s Scholars Program
The Governor’s Scholar Program is a 5-week program for juniors to participate in the summer before their senior year. Although you can’t apply for 2 years, you need to start planning now to improve your chances of being selected. Visit the GSP website at www.gsp.ky.gov to view the current application. We definitely recommend that you start getting the information together for your application now (need honors/awards, activities, community service, & leadership). Don’t procrastinate! You also must take the ACT, SAT, and/or PSAT to be eligible to apply. You may want more than one test score from which to choose. You also need to be in or have taken your 2nd year of a foreign language by your junior year to be eligible for full points in “difficulty of course load” section.
The Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science In Kentucky
The Gatton Academy is a residential program at Western Kentucky University for 120 high school juniors and seniors from KY who have demonstrated talent and interest in pursuing advanced careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Students apply during their sophomore year through a competitive admissions process, which includes their ACT or SAT scores (must have one of these), academic grades from 9th & 10th grades (must have completed Algebra II by the end of sophomore year), essay questions, recommendations from teachers and a counselor, and interviews. The students, who are accepted live on WKU’s campus during the school year and at the end of two years, earn over 60 hours of college credit while obtaining their high school diploma. Tuition, housing, and meals are all provided through funding by the General Assembly. For more information, go to www.wku.edu/academy.
Craft Academy – Morehead University - The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics offers exceptional high school students the opportunity to finish high school while earning up to two years of college credit. Students will take college-level Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, in addition to electives in the arts and humanities. Craft Academy students will live on the campus of Morehead State University in a residence hall specifically designed for high school-aged students. You will get the full college experience by taking classes, eating in the University’s dining halls and interacting with MSU students on a daily basis. Academy acceptance is limited to 60 students per year.
